bulletPolice Licensing Notice

WARNING

Australian residents who purchase door security locks and perimeter locks for their homes or business are protected by the various legislated State Security Licensing Acts against inexperienced and unqualified persons purporting to be locksmiths advertising their services to the public.   Heavy fines and penalties apply to unlicensed operators in most States.

In NSW, a Locksmith advertising in local papers, "Yellow Pages" telephone books or any other form of advertising must display within the body of the advertisement their NINE DIGIT Security License Number. (License numbers displayed which have less than nine digits are not valid Security Licenses under the Act.)  It is an offence against the NSW Security Act (1997) not to display this registration number.  This is your guarantee that the operators/firms you call out have an annual Police probity check.  The public should be aware that holders of Builders Licenses do not in any way qualify as locksmiths and that these persons are generally inexperienced in the intricate nature or the mechanics of modern security locks. (Builders licenses generally have LESS than NINE digits constituting their license numbers.)

Persons purchasing security items over the counter from "Knobs & Knockers" or "Westside Locksmiths" may subsequently be seeking qualified persons to install these items.  Whilst our licensed locksmith staff are able to handle local installation work you will readily see that we cannot service the whole of Australia.  It is incumbent on customers to seek out their own qualified and licensed persons to install their purchases as our policy is not to provide installation help for these security items.  The same policies are held by most of our suppliers and manufacturers as they expect their manufactured items to be installed by knowledgeable, experienced and qualified persons.

We at "Westside" can tell many horrendous stories we know of concerning shonky lock installations and criminal activity associated not only with building security but also motor vehicle theft.  Unfortunately, despite the NSW legislation there are still many unlicensed persons operating from the boot of their cars using hand held mobile phones with no business premises or addresses whatever for you to fall back on.   For your own peace of mind and that of your insurer please take care in selecting your local locksmith.

This notice is inserted in the public interest.
